Fair Trade Mania!

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Who doesn’t love chocolate? It’s creamy, sweet, melts in your mouth and all-around delicious! Despite our obsession with this product, numerous health concerns have been raised as well as the issue of sustainability and fair trade. So now, companies are trying to find ways to make their sweets and confections appeal to a more eco-aware crowd of consumers. Last year two giants in the candy industry, Cadbury and Mars Incorporated announced they were creating fair trade chocolates.

Cadbury, a step ahead of Mars, already has fair trade chocolate for sale to the public. They claim that their chocolate bars are all now 100% fair trade certified cocoa. While Mars announced a partnership with The Rainforest Alliance to create sustainable chocolate. This is a very exciting collaboration between the candy giant and a NGO who works hard to “conserve biodiversity and sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior.

With more and more candy companies embracing healthy and sustainable alternatives, the holidays (especially Halloween) are looking sweeter and sweeter!

Green Halloween in a city near you

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

In 2007, Green Halloween began in the Seattle area. By 20o8, four cities had joined in the fun. Last year a few more signed on.

By Green Halloween 2010, we’ll have at least NINE cities, but we’re aiming for even more!

Here are the cities where we have Green Halloween coordinators planning public events and/or Green Halloween trick-or-treat trails:

  • Seattle
  • San Francisco
  • Los Angeles
  • Phoenix
  • Austin
  • Chicago
  • Washington D.C.
  • NYC
  • Daytona Beach

Do you live in one of these cities and want to be involved? Let us know! We’d love to add you to the mix.

Do you live in a city not represented here? Click here for how you bring the revolution to your community.

We had a HUGE number of spooktacular entries for the 2010 design contest (winning design will be featured on a 2010 ChicoBag reusable trick-or-treat bag).

It was extremely difficult to choose the winner (best capturing “the spirit” of Green Halloween), but here are the top three:

Tom Arma’s Halloween (green-er) costumes

Monday, October 12th, 2009

You might have heard about the line of absolutely adorable costumes made by Tom Arma, the “most published baby photographer in the world” (according to the company selling his products).

While Tom’s costumes are made from conventional materials, they are a step ahead of other conventional costume lines because Tom’s line:

  • Offsets it’s energy usage with renewable energy
  • Prints costume inserts on recycled paper
  • Makes the costume durable to last (and to be worn for year ’round dress up or passed on to younger siblings)

Of course, we would love to see the costumes and other packaging (e.g. the plastic outer packaging) made from recycled, upcycled and sustainable materials, and the costumes made Fair Trade, but we applaud “baby steps” and encourage you to let companies like Halloween Express know what you think, as well. (And don’t forget to let us know what you think by adding your comment below.)

Thank you to Robert Henry from Halloween Express for letting us know about these unique green (-er) Halloween costumes.
