This year, our Trunk or Treat event at our church will incorporate a green component to it! My kids can’t wait!

  3. Angela Says:

I’m not attending any special events per se. Our own Halloween at home will be green though!

  4. emily b Says:

We are attending a candy car and chili event at our church also. A safer way to keep kids close and safe treats to eat! We love it. We try to live as green as possible so it wont change any that day… YEAH!

  5. Stephanie Says:

    I hope so!

  6. cathy Says:

I’ve just started looking into green halloween activities and haven’t planned any yet! So, no green halloween events for us yet.

  7. Alea Shinn Says:

We are going to a fall fun fest at our church this Friday and my son’s school will have a green-ish party on Halloween. His school is a green school so they recycle just about everything and encouraging the kids to find ways to re-use things. :)

  8. Hannah L. Says:

I would if I knew where to find one! We at least get our pumpkins from local farmers.

  9. Michelle L Says:

We went to the costume swap :) We are also going to a pumpkin patch this week and we use everything out of the pumpkin for food.

  10. Jamie C. Says:

No green halloween events found near me YET…still looking

  16. Kirsten Says:

I haven’t seen any. But we go to some local farms that are green..there is a corn maze, pumpkin patch, etc.

  17. Ashley LLloyd Says:

We are staying at home and only going to a few houses so our son can participate. This way we dont end up with tons of candy Shen he’s only allowed a few

  18. Sarah J. Says:

we aren’t attending any “green” events per-say, but we are making our costumes from home, and reusing materials to make decorations.

  19. Laura R. Says:

We went to the local apple orchard to support local agriculture instead of buying apples from the grocery store. And we hope to attend a green event to make our own treat bags. :)

  20. Claire McTiernan Says:

I would love to find more green trick or treat events in my area.

  21. Theresa R Says:

This year our little one will be 14 months old. We’re going to a downtown day time event for the little ones. We also only buy all natural / organic candy, though no one makes the trek up the hill to come to our house! :)

  22. Robin O Says:

We won’t be able to attend any official events, but they sound fantastic–Green Halloween is the best idea ever!!

  23. Tanja Says:

We tried to do a costume swap again this year, but the two near us were a bust. We’re planning on going to the festival on the 29th in Sammamish.

  24. Erin Ashworth Says:

My kids go to a Montessori school where it’s green everyday! So, if attending the party at their school counts, then we’re participating!

A Veggie Skeleton for Halloween

At our daughter’s school each class has a Halloween party.  They pick four families to bring a “treat” and four families to bring something healthy!  Last year our family was asked to bring in a healthy treat for our daughter’s class party so we found this great and easy to make Vegetable Skeleton. I wasn’t sure how popular it would be up next to all the sweet treats but I was pleasantly surprised at the end of the day to see that the tray was pretty much empty…just 3 mushrooms left AND there were still plenty of cakes and cookies left uneaten!!!

Here is the picture my husband took of our veggie skeleton!

This is all it takes to make a veggie skeleton:

• Head of cabbage or iceberg lettuce
• Zucchini slices (rounds)
• Bell Pepper slices (cross-cut)
• Celery stalks
• Sugar snap peas
• Carrots (peeled)
• Broccoli florets
• Cauliflower florets
• Cherry/Grape Tomatoes
• Healthy dressing of your choice!
• Olive slices

Directions:

Step 1. Line half of small bowl with lettuce for the skeleton’s hair; fill with dressing. Place at one end of large tray or baking sheet for the skeleton’s head.

Step 2. Arrange vegetables on tray to resemble skeleton’s body

* We added the fake spiders for a little extra fun :)

Halloween parties can have a balance of sweets and health…by spending a little extra time you can make veggies just as fun as any junk food!

We’ve done all kinds of pumpkin decorating and carving. I like both but I have a slight preference for carving because it’s fun lighting them up.

  2. Kathleen Says:

Pumpkin carving, for sure do we can cook up the seeds! @ktleen2@aol.com

  3. Kellie O'Shields Says:

    Pumpkin Carving for sure!

  4. amy bishop Says:

    PUMPKIN painting :)

  5. Lisa M Says:

This year we will be drilling our pumpkins! we scoop out seeds and then use a drill to make holes-either a pattern or random. Add candle, or light and they’re really beautiful!

  6. Shelbi Stockdale Says:

    Pumpkin carving!

  7. Meghan Says:

Carving the big pumpkin and painting the little ones!

  8. Karrie Harms Says:

We have done both and I think I like painting then decorating.

  9. Sadie Says:

    Pumpkin carving!

  10. Jenelle Says:

    Pumpkin carving all the way!

  11. Ashley LLloyd Says:

I love both this year we choose pumpkin painting. We have food plans for that punkin.

  12. Robin Says:

It’s a great big mess, but pumpkin-carving definitely gets my vote. It’s such an odd-looking thing inside. We like to roast the seeds too!

  13. Mia E Says:

I like pumpkin painting, you can get different details when you use paint. Then when the season is over, wash the paint off, roast it and make pumpkin seeds and pumkin squares… Yummy!

  14. Jamie C Says:

    Pumpkin Carving

  15. rick Says:

    Carving

  16. Alea Shinn Says:

Painting!!! The pumpkin lasts longer that way and it’s way less messier!!!

    aleashinn(at)gmail(dot)com

  17. Amber Saxby Says:

pumpkin carving for sure, the main objective is to get all the seeds out for roasting!

  18. Laura R. Says:

Tough call. It used to be carving, but now that we have little kiddos, sharp knives don’t seem like such a good idea!

  19. Karen Says:

    Pumpkin carving!

    kpg813 at gmail dot com

  20. Chelle Says:

Pumpkin carving. It’s classic. Although, I hate touching all the ‘guts.’

  21. Lynn Says:

We carve so that the seeds can be roasted and the kids get the excitement of lighting a candle to put inside!

  22. Stephanie Says:

    Carving!

  23. Yvette Rogers Says:

    Both are great!

  24. Tom O Says:

Carving!!! We then toast the seeds and admire our work.

  25. jeannine m Says:

    Carving!

  26. Flibitz Says:

Little one isn’t old enough for a knife, so painting it is. Though we’re also leaning towards the ‘mr. potato head’ method of decorating.

  27. monica Says:

Congratulations to Jamie C. for winning the Day #17 Giveaway.

And thank you for all your comments on Pumpkin decorating.

  1. Amanda J Says:

The last time I went trick-or-treating, I was 19, but I am short so it wasn’t too apparent :]. But I believe any older than 14 is too old.

  2. Kirsten Says:

As old as you have the nerve to do it…I am not denying anyone candy who knocks at my door.

  3. Sarah J. Says:

Never too old, as long as someone isn’t rude about asking for for the treats!

  4. Erin Ashworth Says:

I think you can trick or treat as long as you are still not too embarassed to wear a costume.

  5. Jo James Says:

According to my kids, 13 is too old. But as long as you’re wearing a costume and come to my door, you’re getting candy :)
    dylanjoee@msn.com

  6. Beth B Says:

i believe 13 is too old, unless of course you are trick or treating for unicef :)

  7. Jamie C. Says:

I live in a very small, rural community. It is generally accepted that even the HS students trick or treat…of, course they are usually taking younger siblings or neighborhood kids so the parents can stay home and pass out candy!

  8. rick casolari Says:

I think through Jr High is fine, when they enter HS then it is time to stop

  9. Shauna Says:

    16 unless taking siblings

  10. robin Niezgoda Says:

    12

  11. Shannon Dodge Says:

you’re only as old as you feel! so if you feel like trick or treating, do it! :)

  12. Erin Ashworth Says:

You have to be in a costume to trick or treat. If you meet that criteria, feel free to ring the doorbell. It works best when you come with kids, though. :-)

  13. Anne Lehnick Says:

I think once you hit your teen years and you’re not willing to put on a costume, you should stop trick or treating.

  14. Ashley LLloyd Says:

Well I believe as long as it’s done respectfully 18 beacause now your an adult. Me personally I was little do I got to go longer than my friends. I gave it up at twelve I didn’t eat the candy so no point in going

  15. Kathy Says:

I’d say that 18 is the age to stop trock-or-treating, but you are never too old to dress up and have fun! This is the one time every year in which you can be someone other than yourself and just let loose and be whatever you want. Although I was never really into going door to door asking for candy, I have always loved dressing up and being with friends and family to share ghost stories, and play Halloween games!

  16. Chelle Says:

My mom made me stop once I was 12. I was so mad because all of my friends got to keep going. I would have to say 8th grade is probably the limnit for our family. I’m not in a position to limit the age yet so it’s a tough question to answer. I think Halloween is awesome so I don’t know if I would put a limit to celebrating, but maybe just a limit to going door to door asking for treats.

  17. Dusten Says:

I remember going once I was in middle school (13 years old or so) but I felt like a moron. I think that’s probably a good time to stop (or just before then).

  18. Robin O Says:

I would like to say one is never too old, but, honestly, I think that once kids are in high school that is the limit!

  19. Alea Shinn Says:

I think trick or treating should be for young kids. In my opinion, 8th grade should be the last year you trick or treating. I think once you get into high school, you should do Halloween parties or other fun activities. I don’t like seeing high school kids pushing past younger kids and not really watching out for them as they run down the street door to door with most of them not in costume.
The only exception is if you are taking younger siblings or younger kids who have no one else to take them.

  20. Rebecca O Says:

I agree with others who said 8th grade. Kids are about 13 after that parties or high school events. The only exception is if they are lucky enough to be babysitting!

  21. Yvette Rogers Says:

My kids all think you should stop trick or treating at age 20!! A little old in my eyes but shows their enthusiasm. ( they are ages 6,10 and 12)

  22. Michelle L Says:

I don’t think you are ever too old to trick-or-treat… most kids stop around 16- but then there are Halloween parties… Then once you have kids you get to kind of do it again! :)

  23. rosanne Says:

my 17 year old still like trick-or-treating lol …. if him and his friends are willing to dress up they are welcome to go

  24. beth Says:

    16-17 (up through highschool).

  25. Kevin Says:

    Probably around 13

  26. Amber Saxby Says:

as long as you make an effort to show spirit and dress up, I think it’s okay. It’s the kids that show up in street clothes that get rejected from me!

  27. monica Says:

Congratulations to Beth for being selected (via Random.org) as the winner for Day #16 of our Green Giveaways!

Thank you for all of your comments on trick-or-treating! It’s so much fun it’s hard to stop at any age.

Please come trick-or-treat with us again every day this month for more fantastic giveaways! Happy Fall!
