Tom Arma’s Halloween (green-er) costumes

Monday, October 12th, 2009

You might have heard about the line of absolutely adorable costumes made by Tom Arma, the “most published baby photographer in the world” (according to the company selling his products).

While Tom’s costumes are made from conventional materials, they are a step ahead of other conventional costume lines because Tom’s line:

  • Offsets it’s energy usage with renewable energy
  • Prints costume inserts on recycled paper
  • Makes the costume durable to last (and to be worn for year ’round dress up or passed on to younger siblings)

Of course, we would love to see the costumes and other packaging (e.g. the plastic outer packaging) made from recycled, upcycled and sustainable materials, and the costumes made Fair Trade, but we applaud “baby steps” and encourage you to let companies like Halloween Express know what you think, as well. (And don’t forget to let us know what you think by adding your comment below.)

Thank you to Robert Henry from Halloween Express for letting us know about these unique green (-er) Halloween costumes.

Green Halloween volunteers rock the revolution

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

The Green Halloween initiative began in the Seattle area in 2007 – and a year later went nationwide.

How did we grow so fast?

Because of people like Pam Salois of Windham, CT.

Pam is a Green Irene Eco-Consultant and was so inspired by the idea of encouraging people to make Halloween healthier and more eco-friendly (while keeping all the fun) that she volunteered to help spread the word about Green Halloween in her area.

While there are dozens of ways that you (and/or your school, business, neighborhood or entire community) can get involved, small steps, like Pam’s can make a big difference.

Here are some photos from her booth, featuring Green Halloween, that she set up at a local, community event.

Thank you to Pam and to all of the generous people helping us to rock this revolution.

Halloween family activity: make a haunted (gingerbread) house

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

828728Why should Christmas have the all fun?

Build a (yummy) family tradition your kids will scream for (in a good way, of course). It’s an activity, decor and dessert – all rolled into one!

Just use a traditional gingerbread recipe (swapping conventional ingredients for local and/or organic, when possible) OR organic graham crackers as the “house.” Decorate with edibles and organic/all natural confections that conjure the Halloween spirit.

Colors to consider: orange, black, purple and of course, GREEN! For a list of Halloween foods colored naturally by Mother Earth, visit out food page. (Who says you can’t use kale grass?)

Don’t have time to cook, but want to create the tradition? Buy the kit (photo above) online from Magic Cabin.
